Specializing in Unique and Collectible Peonies

Peonies embody optimism. Planted in the fall, just as the warm summer daylight begins to dwindle, newly planted peony roots send out their tiny rootlets during the long fall and early winter months, holding the promise of treasures that will provide many years of enjoyment and dependable bloom after they become established. Peonies indeed are heirlooms that can be passed along for generations.

Though peonies have a reputation for being old fashioned – and while certainly they may have been a prominent fixture in grandma's garden, modern peonies are continuously being developed in a stunning array of new hues and forms. Private Stock Peonies (PSP), a nursery licensed by the State of Montana, is pleased to showcase and sell to Montanans some of the best and most unique varieties from eras past and present.

Here I am picking honeyberries/haskap. Other than peonies, growing honeyberries has been one of my passions. See the Events tab for more information about visiting the farm for a honeyberry field day this summer.

As a grower and seller, I look for peony varieties that are not usually found in your local general nursery or box store.  Beyond that, however, my primary goal is to find peonies that have standout characteristics that you would be proud to feature in your garden and showcase to your guests.  Some of those characteristics include unusual colors or forms, as well as an exceptional overall appearance throughout the blooming and growing season.  Some peonies are considered rare simply because they are new to the market, others because they are in perpetual high demand or because they are a bit slower or more difficult to propagate.  Due to the aforementioned reasons, these peony varieties often command a higher price.  And like most commodities, they tend to go down in price over time as supply increases.  The bottom line is, when one considers how long a peony can potentially grow and provide beauty in your garden, it is well worth the initial investment. In future years, as I build my inventory from the ground up (literally) watch for offerings that truly represent the best of the best — both newer and older varieties.

PSP is sited in a corner of the Townsend area ranch that I grew up on.  At only 4 acres, I refer to it as my mini farm.  I have raised and sold many perennials here over the years, including bearded iris, daylilies, lilies, and hosta – but have specialized in peonies for the most recent 10.  As my gardening acumen has increased, I have converted my plot into what I believe models a commitment to sustainable agriculture that values the health of the soil and helps support the many denizens that inhabit or frequent the site such as wild bees, butterflies, and small birds.

I hope you find the information on this website valuable and perhaps discover a few peonies along the way that you can come to treasure as much as I do.
